Falling asleep as a child I would watch the tall gentle giants swaying outside my window. Glistening in the rain. Creating wisping melodies singing me to sleep. I played beneath their legs during the day and took refuge in their shelter.  As an adult they bring me the feeling of home, of safety, of relief. I am in their glowing green wake of life. Trees can communicate through a network of mycelium mushrooms fibers communicating like a nervous system under the soil. Through this a mother can deliver nutrients to her young meters away readily adapting nutrients and communication based on changing threats and environments within the forest. This is intelligence. I offer these Treescapes to honor these living beings in gratitude for the life they house and nourish, including myself as a child, my family today, and the hundreds of generations that have passed. The forests are our lungs, they need us to remember we need them.

I am thankful for my family and ancestors for bringing me here, it is who I am, this landscape is a part of me. At the same time I know colonization, that many settlers like my family benefit from, has been at layers of suffering for indigenous people (loss of land, attempted removal of cultural practices, loss of children forced to residential schools who never returned, and unmeasurable amounts of intergenerational pain following). I have included the indigenous place names where I could find them on the locations to educate myself as well as the viewer and to honour the indigenous peoples of the past and of today. Often it is indigenous groups at the front lines fighting to protecting the forests. Huy chexw – Thank you. I raise my hands to you.
